Marine biologists came to the rescue
Officials who arrived at the rescue site report that marine life conservation experts and whale rescue professionals are on their way with the proper rescue equipment. Drone photographs show scores of big black-skinned creatures sleeping between the water and the coast. A local told officials about the high number of fish that had become stranded on the shore.
Whales in danger due to hot temperatures
The cause for such a big gathering of whales among the fish is yet unknown. Scientists believe that such a course resulted by diverting and getting too near to the coast. According to Griffith University marine biologist Olaf Menecke, such a high number of whales visiting the shore is rare. Warmer temperatures, he warned, might potentially change ocean currents and displace the whales’ typical food sources.
Pilot whales are extremely social animals
Menecke stated that pilot whales are particularly gregarious creatures, and that they are known for being enormously confined. Pilot whales are highly sociable creatures that will pursue threatened group members. As a result, they are often in danger themselves. According to Menecke, whales travel to different places for food and are beginning to look for food sources. They are not in excellent health when they do so. They are hungry, so they risk their lives in search of food, and as a result, they end up on the seashore.
A similar incidence occurred two years ago, and the observation of pilot whales in Tasmania is not rare, according to the department. Whales have been spotted on the beaches here several times. Around 470 long whales were discovered on Tasmanian beaches two years ago, in September 2020. After a week of work, 111 of these whales were rescued, while the remaining animals died. According to the Department of the Environment, the whale is a protected species, and tampering with its corpse is a criminal even after death.
“Whales are a protected species, even after death, and interfering with a corpse is a crime,” the environment agency stated.
Fourteen sperm whales were sighted Monday afternoon in the Bass Strait between Melbourne and Tasmania’s northern shore on King Island, which is part of the state of Tasmania.
According to Griffith University marine biologist Olaf Meynecke, sperm whales washing ashore are exceptional. Warmer temperatures, he believes, may also be altering ocean currents and shifting the whales’ usual diet.
“They’ll go to different places and look for new food sources,” Meynecke explained. “When they do this, they are not in the ideal physical condition because they may be malnourished, so they may take greater chances and maybe travel closer to shore.”
The pilot whale is infamous for mass strandings for reasons that are not fully understood.
