He was young—only 25.
On February 11 at Sportpark Terschueren in West Flanders Province, a terrible event occurred during a game between Winkel Sport B and Westrozebeke.
Espeel reportedly saved a penalty shot when Winkel was ahead 2-1 in the second half, but then he collapsed on the field shortly afterward, as reported by the local press.
Although a pacemaker was used in an attempt to save Espeel’s life, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition was deemed terminal.
Monday will bring the results of the autopsy performed to identify the cause of death.
Flowers were left at a goal mount by Espeel’s teammates on Monday, the day after his death, and over a thousand of Espeel’s fans, friends, and family allegedly participated in a walk of silence in Sint-Eloois-Winkel to honour his memory.
The team released a statement saying, “Winkel Sport is in very profound mourning by the sudden death of Arne Espeel.”
“Our deepest sympathies go out to Arne’s loved ones on their tragic loss. The football game is secondary.”
