The Bronx Zoo is a zoo located in Bronx Park in the Bronx, New York. It was formerly known as the Bronx Zoological Park and the Bronx Zoological Gardens. It is one of the biggest zoos in the country and the biggest metropolitan zoo, with 265 acres (107 hectares) of parkland and natural habitats that are divided by the Bronx River. As of 2009, the zoo had 2.15 million visitors annually on average. Astor Court, the zoo’s first permanent structures, is made up of a collection of Beaux-Arts pavilions arranged around a huge, elliptical sea lion pool. Paul Manship, a sculptor, created the Rainey Memorial Gates in 1934, and they were added on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

On November 8, 1899, the zoo’s 22 exhibits and 843 animals were on display. William Temple Hornaday was the organization’s initial director, serving in that capacity for 30 years. The zoo has been essential to animal conservation since its establishment. The American Bison Society was established in 1905 in an effort to prevent the extinction of the American bison, whose population had been reduced from tens of millions of animals to just a few hundred. They were successfully returned into the wild two years later. Three Chinese alligators were successfully released back into the wild by the zoo in 2007. The reproduction marked an important turning point in the zoo’s 10-year project to return the species to China’s Yangtze River.
The Bronx Zoo is today famous across the globe for its extensive and varied animal collection, as well as its award-winning displays. The zoo is certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is a part of a network of four zoos and one aquarium run by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
