Grand Daddy I.U., a rapper who was reared in Hempstead but was born in Queens, passed away on Tuesday, according to sources. He was 54.

The 1989 release of the Long Island hip-hop artist’s debut album Smooth Assassin on the late Biz Markie’s record company Cold Chillin’ Records made him famous. His most well-known songs include “Something New,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Rap charts, and “Sugar Free,” which peaked at No. 9.

After learning of Grand Daddy I.U.’s passing, hip-hop celebrities and supporters from Long Island and elsewhere paid tribute to him, including LL Cool J.
