Leach, 61, is in his third season with the Bulldogs and led Mississippi State to a 24-22 Egg Bowl victory over Ole Miss on Nov. 24.
According to school president Mark E Keenum and interim athletic director Bracky Brett, defensive coordinator Zach Arnett is “in charge of the MSU football team” until Leach’s return.
On Jan. 2 (11 a.m., ESPN), the Bulldogs (8-4, 4-4 SEC) will face Illinois (8-4, 5-4 Big 10) in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida.
Leach introduced his Air Raid offence to Starkville in January 2020, and he’s 19-17 with Mississippi State in three seasons.

Before joining the Bulldogs, Leach coached at Texas Tech and Washington State. In 21 seasons, he has a 158-107 record.
Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach was transported to the hospital on Sunday after a “personal health concern” at his house earlier in the day, according to the university.

The school released no other information about Leach’s condition, who is in his third season with the Bulldogs. According to the school, during a meeting between university president Mark Keenum and interim athletic director Bracky Brett, They agreed to have defensive coordinator Zach Arnett take over as head coach until Leach is able to return.
The institution said it will have no further comment other than to say that “the university’s thoughts and prayers are with Mike and [wife] Sharon and their family.”
