La Torre is the daughter of director Olive La Torre and Filipino artist Leonora Reyes. She is the mother of the on-screen couple Bernie Pérez and Cheche. She is a coloratura soprano who earned a music degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Music with a vocal major and a piano minor. When she entered a singing contest in Manila when she was five years old, she started singing. She started out in the theatre during World War II. She began working at the Manila Grand Opera House in 1948. “Si Petite Mon Amour,” her debut single, was published in 1950 on Bataan Records. Later, she relocated to Villar Records. The 1950s and 1960s saw her go by the name “Queen Kundiman.”

She began creating movies in 1941 with Ang Maestra before switching to Sampaguita Pictures, her father’s production company.
