Early 1990s films like The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values are both classics. The wonderfully macabre family made their debut in a single-panel comic that was published in The New Yorker in 1938, thanks to illustrator Charles Addams. The Addams Family is an eccentric aristocratic family that is obsessed with all things gloomy and depressing and is completely unaware of how uncomfortable other people find their particular obsessions to be. When the first live-action depiction of the family aired on ABC in 1964, they first appeared on television. Since then, this eccentric family has appeared in a number of animated and live-action television shows, as well as specials including a crossover with the Mystery Inc. clan from Scooby-Doo. The Addams Family was adapted as an animated film in 2019, and a sequel, The Addams Family 2, was produced in 2021. These two most recent animated films received generally positive reviews, although they only achieved modest box office success.

The 1991 and 1993 films produced by Barry Sonnenfeld have emerged as the seminal work that has been used to introduce the members of the family, despite the fact that The Addams Family has appeared in several incarnations across multiple media.

Gomez, the devoted father and hopelessly amorous husband, is the head of the family and was famously portrayed by Raul Julia in the 1991 movie. He enjoys swordplay, upholding family customs, and growing his recognisable pencil-thin moustache. Morticia is Gomez’s wife and mother, and she is breathtakingly attractive. Anjelica Huston, who played Morticia in The Witches, is well recognised for her demure grace and detached parenting style. Christopher Lloyd’s portrayal of Uncle Fester in Back to the Future is best known for his wild eyes, bent back, and pale complexion. The eldest son of Gomez and Morticia is Pugsley (until Pubert came along in The Addams Family Values). Other residents of the home include Granny, Gomez’s mother, portrayed by Margaret Alford, Lurch, the Frankenstein-like butler, played by Carel Struycken, Thing, a disembodied hand, Cousin Itt, a hairy creature who enjoys wearing sunglasses from the 1970s, and Itt.

Only Wednesday Addams remains who hasn’t received a proper introduction. played by Christina Ricci, Gomez and Morticia Addams’ oldest kid. Like her mother, Wednesday is reserved, but she has a much stronger tendency to embrace her darker side. She keeps coming up with different devices with the intention of “murdering” her younger brother Pugsley and eventually her unborn son Pubert. Her delivery of each phrase is deadpan, as if talking about murder were just a matter of stating the obvious. Just a single word makes up one of her most memorable phrases. When Morticia introduces Wednesday to another mother in the 1993 movie, the latter asks, “Boys?” as Wednesday is “at that very special age when a girl has only one thing on her mind.” Without missing a beat, Wednesday simply responds, “Homicide.”
