The university did not disclose any other information regarding the 61-year-old Leach’s health, but Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated stated that he was in a “critical” state. The university did not disclose any additional information regarding the health of the Leach.
After the shocking medical catastrophe, Robbie Faulk of 247Sports asserted that Leach ‘needed a miracle’ to recover from his condition.
Around 125 miles away in Jackson, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Leach was transported by ambulance from his house in Starkville to the emergency room there.
‘That is the extent of the information that MSU has available regarding Coach Leach’s condition, and the university will make no other comment at this time other than to say that the thoughts and prayers of the university are with Mike and Sharon and their family,’ the school said in a statement. Currently, the university will only say that Mike and Sharon and their family are in everyone’s prayers.
During Leach’s absence, defensive coordinator Zach Arnett will step up to serve as interim head coach of the team.
No. 22 The ReliaQuest Bowl will take place on January 2 in Tampa, Florida, and will feature a matchup between Mississippi State (8-4) and Illinois (8-4).
Leach is now in his third season with the Bulldogs, and the team has a record of 19-17 under his leadership. His overall record in 21 seasons as a head coach includes 158 wins and 107 losses split between Texas Tech (2000-09), Washington State (2012-19), and Mississippi State.

Who is Mike Leach?
The head football coach at Mississippi State University is an American named Michael Charles Leach (born March 9, 1961). He is the architect of the NCAA’s record-breaking “Air Raid” offence and has won national coaching awards on two separate occasions. While coaching at Texas Tech University from 2000 to 2009, he amassed the most wins of any coach in school history; while leading Washington State University from 2012 to 2019, he achieved the third-most wins of any coach in school history.
During his time as offensive coordinator at Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta State, and Kentucky in the 1990s, under Hal Mumme’s leadership, Leach helped design the spread offence concept known as the air raid offence. Leach’s offences, both with Mumme and later under his own leadership as head coach, have set a number of school and NCAA marks.
